Gretchen Wachs Installation

I am fascinated by what happens in the dialogue between the density and surface of clay with the luminescence and transparency of glass. This is a departure from my other work where painting plays such a key part.

Here I am working with form and light and the interface of the clay and the glass. Joining two different materials creates a tension that always intrigues and excites me. This is a process that demands endurance and time. My hands are often deep in plaster or wet with polishing and grinding. The firing and annealing of the glass takes many days. In anticipation I open the kiln, release the glass from the plaster cast and will still have hours ahead, cold working and polishing the glass. Weeks later the glass is ready to join with the clay and the process is complete.
