Works on Paper by Gretchen Wachs

I studied printmaking and photography in undergraduate school and learned the art of intaglio in Berlin. The etchings allow me to draw images from nature; trees, plants, birds, elemental forms. The large plexi plates are ground for abstraction. I love the process; rolling out the ink, the smell of turpentine, the etched copper, the rolling gears of the press, the lifting of the wet paper from the inked plate, the transferred image. All of these sensory impulses spark my creativity and I can work an entire day without tiring. The development of the prints as the plate is inked and re-inked, passed through the press, compressed by heavy steel rollers results in a layering of color, texture and image.
